Want to get into the Steepwater Band? Listen to this podcast episode
I co-hosted State of Amorica's 'Patreon Radio' and we broke down their catalog
The Steepwater Band is the most under-appreciated rock n’ roll band of this century.
If you’ve ever been drawn to crunchy guitar riffs, a great rhythm section, and some bluesy vocals, this is your chance to get into a band that makes that kind of music as well as any band doing it today. Steepwater has a nice but not overwhelming back catalog to get into and has gotten better with age — the band’s most recent albums (released in 2020 and 2022) are my favorites.
Above is the State of Amorica ‘Patreon Radio’ podcast episode I recorded with SOA podcast producer Jason Doncis — ahead of its official release next week. We give a breakdown of each Steepwater album and play a song we recommend from each.
I hope our enthusiasm for the band is infectious.
This episode is also a companion to the release of State of Amorica’s excellent interview of Steepwater vocalist/guitarist Jeff Massey and drummer Joe Winters in advance of Steepwater’s show supporting Marc Ford at the Taffeta Music Hall in Lowell, Mass, on Saturday, May 18.
One quick correction in the podcast: I refer to the band being called “The Steepwater Blues Band” a couple times in the episode. In subsequent conversations with Winters, I found out that was an error in the reporting I’d read on the band and they were never referred to by that name.
February concerts: Two of my favorites
I know what you’re going to say: Blackberry Smoke and The Steepwater Band … again?! Yep, get used to it! In all serio…
January concerts: A great start to 2024
After writing a monster 2023 concerts in review that I spent hours working on and cutting down, and turning into two pieces (one of which was still VERY long), I decided to start writing about each concert I went to. Except … I’ve already fallen behind on that. There are no rules on this Subs…
Concerts 2023: The Outtakes
Almost every time I come home from the store, I have some story to tell my wife about an odd encounter or annoyance. She claims these things never happen to her. Well, if going to Walmart is an adventure for me, imagine what happens when I go to concerts.
Concerts 2023: A review
One of the priorities I made with my re-discovery of music was to see more live shows. In 2023, mission accomplished. I saw 26 different bands at 15 shows. I can easily say that’s my personal record. Thanks for reading Justin Conn’s Music Substack ! Subscribe for free to …
Look Dad, I’m playing your guitar!
I was sitting in another room on my phone when I heard a familiar sound. But I hadn’t heard that sound in a long time. Feelings flooded back. The sound made me put my phone down and walk into the room where my wife was holding my dad’s old guitar and strumming it.
Music is awesome, which I somehow forgot, but then remembered
Some people are really good at knowing who they are. They develop identities young and perfect it as they go I was always jealous of those people. But at 49, I think I’m finally figuring it out. I love music — listening to it, reading about it, talking about it, listening to people talk about it … and now, even playing it.
Totally agree about The Steepwater Band being under appreciated. I run the fan page on FB. It is not just one thing that helps a band gain fans, but I love what you’re doing here!
